Medtronic has received their US Food and Drug (FDA) 530(k) clearance of their NIM Vital nerve monitoring system. The NIM system helps physicians identify, confirm, and monitor nerve function, helping to reduce the risk of nerve damage during head and neck surgery.

The NIM system works by using Medtronic technology to provide detailed intraoperative nerve condition data, to inform surgical strategy. This data helps to increase efficiency and precision.

Gregory Randolph, Professor of Otolaryngology, Harvard medical school, Cambridge, USA, commented that, “There are things we can’t do with our eyes and our hands. Both the NIM Vital and PTeye systems empower surgeons to improve their procedures, and Medtronic continues to provide these types of important operative solutions.”

Medtronic also announced their acquisition of privately-held Ai Biomed Corp., marker of the PTeye, the only probe-based technology of its kind, designed to help confirm parathyroid tissue, identified by the physician during surgery. This will further expand their ENT portfolio.
