The Spine Hospital of Louisiana at The NeuroMedical Center, Baton Rouge, USA, has become the first hospital in the USA to install the Ultimax-i FPD multipurpose system from Toshiba America Medical Systems.

This X-ray system is designed to provide a wide range of angiographic services, whilst enhancing patient comfort, increasing patient safety and improving physician efficiency for a wide range of specialised spinal procedures including myelograms, lumbar punctures and numerous pain management procedures.

A tilting C-arm is intended to limit areas of anatomy receiving radiation exposure, and can help enhance physicians’ efficiency by rendering detailed digital images of the spine. Accommodating up to 500lb with its tabletop horizontal the system should enable patients to rest comfortably during exams, offering more room for patients with wider shoulders. According to a press release, the table can be lowered to a few inches above the floor, making it easier for patients to manoeuvre.

“The Ultimax is improving our patients’ safety by limiting radiation dose to the lowest possible amounts for the clinical application,” says R Stephen Williams, neuroradiologist at The Spine Hospital of Louisiana. “This technology reduces radiation without compromising image quality.”
