Spineology unveils “first-of-its-kind” Duo Ti expandable interbody fusion procedure

Spineology has unveiled its Duo Ti expandable interbody fusion procedure, which combines the company’s proprietary mesh technology with porous titanium in order to deliver a large, anatomy-conforming implant via anatomy-conserving lateral decubitus and prone approaches.

The porous titanium blocks are made from OsteoSync Ti (SITES Medical) and feature a highly porous macro structure with micro and nano-texturing, and a low modulus of elasticity in order to help facilitate superior bone ingrowth capabilities, say Spineology, who will be demonstrating the technology at the North American Spine Society (NASS) meeting this week.

The Duo Ti procedure is performed through a small portal tube. Following insertion of the implant, the mesh component is filled and expanded with bone in situ which enables surgeons to reduce retraction requirements, avoid and protect neural structures, and indirectly decompress.

Pierce Nunley, director of the Spine Institute of Louisiana (Shreveport, USA), said: “In my experiences with Duo, my patients recover quickly following surgery, return to activities timely, and show durable long-term relief. Because of the minimal psoas muscle manipulation, and the outcomes I see in my patients treated with Duo, this is the superior lateral procedure for these indications.”

Larry Khoo of the Spine Clinic of Los Angeles (Los Angeles, USA), added: “The exposure-to-footprint ratio I experience with Duo is exceptional. Duo has enabled me to minimise exposure and subsequently provide my patients very minimal hospitalisations. This is very beneficial for these trying Covid times and bodes well for the use of the technology long-term in the outpatient setting.”

“I am pleased to announce such a minimally disruptive approach for lateral spine surgeons,”, commented Spineology CEO John Booth. “Recent macro events have increased the need for spine surgery to become even more minimally invasive. Our new Duo system will lead the way for lateral surgeons who want to offer their patients all of the advantages of less-invasive surgery.”
