One of the most common reasons for patients seeking medical attention is due to spine problems, particularly for low back pain and neck pain. In the US, the National Health Interview Survey reported that prevalence for low back pain is 25% and 14% for neck pain. Other studies have demonstrated a rapid increase in inpatient and outpatient surgery, and complementary and alternative care. However, to date, national expenditures for back and neck problems have not been studied in the US in relation to health status measures.
