Students of the BioDesign programme at Hebrew University, Israel, have developed a fibre-optic guidewire to minimise complications in orthopaedic procedures, such as spinal fusion surgeries. This system should identify deflection or bending of the guide-wire in real time, allowing the surgeon will be able to adjust the procedure before damage occurs.
