The first implantation of the VariLift-LX system (Wenzel Spine) has taken place. The company is to begin a limited release of the system, following the successful procedure.
VariLift-LX is a next generation addition to the company’s range of expandable stand-alone interbody devices. The zero-profile system is intended for use in lumbar fusion procedures, and is available in two lengths and five heights. The system is designed to allow surgeons to implant a device, optimising fit within the disc space. According to a company release, surgeons are able to implant and expand VariLift-LX without disengaging the instrumentation that also allows them to insert autograft material.
Adam Lewis was the first surgeon to perform a case with the VariLift-LX System. Lewis comments, “The VariLift-LX System is ideally suited for minimally invasive lumbar fusion surgery. This provides surgeons with a method to perform transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion procedures with a 2.5–3 cm incision utilising a single, expandable interbody device.”
Lewis is a neurosurgeon and founder of the Jackson Neurosurgery Clinic in Jackson, USA. He adds, “The VariLift-LX system provides spine surgeons the technology and technique to move more fusion cases to an outpatient setting. After placement of the VariLift-LX expandable device, the patient had excellent relief of the back and leg pain and was discharged later in the same day after surgery.”
Wenzel Spine will be continuing the limited release over the next several weeks to multiple surgical facilities. Full launch of the VariLift-LX System is planned in spring 2016.
