David Cumming, the current president of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS), speaks to Spinal News International about some of the main messages and key themes to come out of this year’s meeting (23–25 March 2022; Belfast, UK), which he notes included a particular focus on frailty and fragility and the “best way of managing this difficult population”.

At BASS 2022 there was also a number of “exciting” discussions on robotics and its future use in spine surgery as well as how the Covid-19 pandemic has “affected not just patients and doctors but also trainees and their ability to get operative experience and skills”.

Cumming outlines some of the highlights of his presidency, including adapting to the pandemic by introducing greater online education and working with a range of other societies to “develop best practices, policies and pathways” for patients and surgeons.

Technology in the field of spine “is definitely developing”, says Cummings, who adds that advances such as robotics and navigation should “be introduced in the right way” in order to “safely improve patient outcomes” as well as help educate trainees.
