Augmedics has announced that it has now treated more than 3,000 patients with its augmented reality (AR) xvision spine system. The news comes just five months after xvision’s milestone 2,000th patient.
A cutting-edge navigation technology named for its ability to give surgeons ‘x-ray vision’, xvision made history as the first US Food and Drug Administration approved AR navigation system for surgery, state Augmedics.
It was subsequently used to perform the United States’ first ‘augmented reality spine surgery’ at The Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, USA) in June 2020. Lauded for its ability to allow surgeons to accurately navigate instruments and implants while looking directly at the patient, xvision has been adopted by surgeons in 21 US states, including several major academic intuitions across the country, add the company.
The landmark 3,000th case was performed by Safdar Khan, chief of orthopedic spine surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (Columbus, USA), who has called the technology a “complete game-changer”.
“This has dramatically changed the way we do surgery,” said Khan. “xvision has made it so much easier to safely and accurately place screws, all while maintaining the ability to teach residents and fellows.”
