Augmedics has announced the milestone achievement of 2,000 commercial cases completed utilising its xvision spine system.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared xvision system is designed to allow surgeons to see patients’ anatomy as if they have ‘X-ray vision.’ The augmented reality (AR) technology enables accurate navigation of instruments and implants while looking directly at the patient, giving surgeons better visualisation, control, and accuracy during spine procedures, say the company.

Kevin Hykes, president & CEO of Augmedics, said: “This achievement cements Augmedics’ unparalleled leadership in the important new field of augmented reality navigation. xvision was the first AR navigation system for surgery and remains the only technology on the market with widespread commercial adoption.

Two thousand xvision cases is an incredible accomplishment and one that we share with surgeons, operating room (OR) teams, and hospital staff across the country. It’s a true team win.”

John Stevenson (Gainesville, USA), a neurosurgeon and spine specialist who performed the 2,000th case, commented: “I’m always on the lookout for new technology that can improve accuracy. Augmedics has been a game changer for my practice and my patients.

“In my almost 25 years as a spine surgeon, I’ve used just about every type of navigation on the market. xvision has transformed the way I do spine surgery. Its accuracy equates to patient safety and the fact that it’s an economic benefit to the hospital makes it a winner in my mind.”

“We are incredibly thankful for the partnership of surgeons like John Stevenson,” added Hykes. “Our mission at Augmedics is to revolutionise surgery to improve outcomes for patients and surgeons alike. To see that play out in real life over 2,000 times is a true privilege—and a remarkable motivator as we continue to roll-out xvision in ORs across the country.”
